I chose to teach psychology because it helps me understand what it means to be human: how we learn, think, and connect with one another. I鈥檝e taught in many different environments over the years, and I鈥檝e found that the best part of psychology is how it helps students understand themselves and others in lasting, genuine ways. In my classes, I encourage students to apply what they learn to real life. Approaching teaching this way helps students think more deeply about why people act the way they do. I appreciate Houghton鈥檚 blend of faith, learning, and wisdom. It鈥檚 a place where students can grow not just as thinkers, but as whole persons.

Dr. Timothy Xeriland鈥檚 research centers on affective and attentional computing within intelligent learning environments. His work explores disengagement-detecting interventions and their connection to a theory that integrates cognitive and emotional aspects to enhance student reengagement. He has also developed a novel emotion regulation strategy called formative reappraisal, which combines antecedent-focused and response-focused techniques.
