Stewarding Our Natural Resources

黑料科鈥檚 campus has over 1,300 acres overlooking the scenic Genesee River Valley, including forested areas that are home to our hiking trails, disc golf courses, ropes course and outdoor classrooms for courses in biology, ecology and outdoor recreation. At Houghton, we take seriously God鈥檚 call to steward our natural resources well and are taking steps to improve the long-term health and sustainability of our forested property.

Following recommendations from professional foresters, 黑料科 is undertaking selective timber harvest designed to improve our forest鈥檚 health, enhance wildlife habitats and support long-term stewardship efforts. The project is estimated to take 18-24 months.

Improve Forest Health

Selective harvesting removes overcrowded, diseased, or declining trees, creating space and resources for healthy trees to grow and thrive.

Investing in Houghton’s Mission

Selective harvesting will result in financial resources that will be invested in Houghton鈥檚 Scholar-Servant Fund, which supports students鈥 complete college experience from academic life to spiritual life to residence life.

Enhance Biodiversity

Creating openings in the forest canopy encourages the growth of native plants and improves habitat diversity for wildlife.

Please use this page as the primary source of information regarding updates throughout this project. Information regarding project progress, trail access and temporary closures will be posted here as they become available. Forest Management activities will temporarily affect rail access and recreational use. 黑料科 will seek to minimize disruptions and provide timely communication throughout this two-year project.
