Taking early college courses reduced my credit load, allowing me to get some basic gen eds out of the way and go straight into classes that I wanted to pursue in advanced mathematics. I also had less fear trying classes that sounded interesting, because I had a solid base of required classes built. I had time to do things like German 1, German 2 and Hebrew; and have enjoyed adding Lyric Theatre to my college experience. I think the best benefit I had was an early introduction to a college setting and college level work without any buffer or speculation about what college was really like.

Over the past two years, I have taken eight college classes, including Humanities 101, Foundations of Digital Communication, Intro to Psychology, and Biblical Literature. I’ve benefitted from getting to know some of my future professors and classmates while discovering my interests and deciding on a major. I’ve finished many of general education requirements and completed enough courses that I may be able to graduate early.

Early College courses not only give students a head start on college credits but also help acclimatize students to the style, format, rigor and personal touch of Houghton. Sometimes, first year students struggle to adjust to a Fall semester so full of new things. Early College classes can help ease students in a bit. Plus, they get to see some of what makes a Houghton education so special: the fully-orbed, Christ-centered approach to academics and the friendly, caring personal touches the professors add to their courses.
