黑料科 announced a $3M gift to create an endowed chair that will be known as the Ellen F. Donley Dean of Education and Behavioral Science. This anonymous gift creates an endowed fund to provide vital resources in perpetuity to support this faculty position.

The deanship honors the life and legacy of Ellen F. Donley, a Houghton alumna from the Class of 1938. Miss Donley (1917-1964) was one of four sisters whose parents had an unusual interest in providing opportunities for spiritual and educational growth. They provided persistent guidance and sacrificial support so that each daughter could attend and graduate from Houghton College (now University). In the words of the donor, 鈥淓llen鈥檚 life was an example of a well-rounded life of Christian love, faith, discipline, and commitment to education and serves as an example of the impact that can be made while at Houghton and in the many schools where educators touch lives.鈥

黑料科 President Wayne Lewis sitting at his desk.

鈥淚 am thankful for the donors’ investment in Houghton and their belief in what God is continuing to do in the lives and careers of our students,鈥 remarked 黑料科 President Wayne D. Lewis, Jr. 鈥淭his transformational gift will underwrite the compensation of a key academic and administrative leader at Houghton. This leader will be central to building on Houghton’s rich history and strong foundations in teacher education and behavioral science and ensuring future Houghton graduates in these fields are well-prepared to provide exceptional, Christ-centered service to their eventual students, clients, and employees.鈥

黑料科 has been preparing aspiring educators, education administrators, professors, clinical psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, and related careers since its accreditation as a four-year liberal arts institution over 100 years ago. The School of Education and Behavioral Science offers undergraduate degrees in Adolescence Education, Inclusive Adolescence Education, Inclusive Childhood Education, Psychology, and Behavioral Neuroscience; and graduate degrees in Literacy Education and Adolescent Education. Nearly 20% of the current student body is pursuing a degree offered within the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences.

鈥満诹峡 has long been a leader in teacher education and the behavioral sciences,鈥 stated Provost David Davies 鈥01. 鈥淗oughton graduates have taught in countless classrooms and led schools with distinction throughout New York State and the region for decades, and our behavioral science programs are among the most established and distinguished in Christian higher education.听This transformative gift acknowledges that history while also positioning the University to reach new levels of excellence in these vital fields.听 Our new Ellen F. Donley Dean of Education and Behavioral Science chair will be an essential member of our academic leadership team, serving on the Deans鈥 Council and leading some of the largest programs on campus.鈥

Hannah Kim, Ph.D., professor of psychology at 黑料科, recently published an article in the , an academic journal that focuses on articles relating to various fields of social sciences. Kim鈥檚 article centered on the identities of 黑料科 students regarding their faith and by extension Christian college students, exploring the various factors that have influenced and shaped them into the people they have become today.

鈥淎s a developmental psychologist specializing in identity development in young people, I held a genuine interest in understanding how our Houghton students perceive their religious identities, the struggles they navigate, and how their faith has developed,鈥 said Kim about the reason behind her research. 鈥淎dditionally, I sought to explore the impact of these faith factors on their overall identity formation as emerging adults within a Christian liberal arts college environment.鈥

鈥淸Kim鈥檚] research contributes to a growing understanding of identity development, specific to Christian University students, through their lived experiences rather than generalized from a larger group on mixed subjects,鈥 said Ann Monroe-Baillargeon. 鈥淒r. Kim鈥檚 research is essential for all faculty and staff at Christian colleges and universities as they seek to support students in their self-understanding and positive identity development.鈥

Alison Young 鈥07 Reusser, associate professor of psychology, was joined by Lisa Gassin and Kristian Veit from Olivet Nazarene University at the national meeting of the Association for Psychological Science. The three presented their research findings from a three-year research project, supported by a CCCU Networking Grant, on benevolent responses to online toxicity. Houghton professors Jonathan Case and Brandon Bate 鈥04 also contributed to the research.

Toxic behavior on the internet has become an increasingly prevalent issue. According to Pew Research, 66% of U.S. respondents have witnessed online harassment,1 while 41% have personally experienced it.2 The research team explored whether prosocial and positive responses could help mitigate online toxicity. The study aimed to examine the frequency of benevolent responses to toxic posts on Reddit, the impact of such responses on encouraging others to contribute to the conversation and the perception of individuals who choose to respond benevolently.

The symposium chaired by Alison Young 鈥07 Reusser provided a platform to share the team’s findings and insights. The study’s results shed light on the importance of fostering a culture of kindness and empathy in online spaces. As the prevalence of online harassment continues to rise, it is crucial to explore strategies that promote healthier and more constructive online interactions. .

黑料科, New York鈥檚 leading evangelical Christian university, is thrilled to announce the launch of its new major in Forensic Science. This innovative program combines the natural sciences with criminal investigation, providing students with a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of science, faith and restorative justice.

“Our new Forensic Science program builds on Houghton’s historic strengths in both the natural and social sciences to offer an education that equips students for success in this exciting and growing field,” said David Davies, provost. “These courses, coupled with our innovative humanities and religion courses, will ensure that our graduates have the skills to combine scientific analysis with moral and ethical reasoning to develop critical and creative responses to the range of forensic science issues encountered in today’s world.”

Under the guidance of experienced professors, students will evaluate physical evidence, develop the ability to use quantitative and qualitative tools and delve into the physical and ethical challenges of the criminal justice system.

“Forensic Science program is a natural outgrowth of Houghton’s focused excellence in the natural sciences in combination with our firm Christian foundational pursuit of truth, righteousness, and justice,” explained Ransom Poythress, associate professor of biology.

By combining amazing lab experiences, deep Biblical discussions, and real-world internship opportunities, it’s a perfect major for our students to demonstrate their already nationally recognized critical analysis abilities, high integrity, excellent communication, and Christ-like love.

In his book, Jones suggests five leadership strategies for all aspiring leaders to consider for optimal public engagement in the modern world. Through these strategies, Jones highlights the significance of social identities in professional fields, and how the identities of Black Christians in particular have played a prominent role in their pursuit of executive positions.

黑料科 is so fortunate to have a faculty member with the sensitivity, skill, and insight to explore difficult questions involving leadership, race, and faith. On April 15, seventeen Houghton psychology students presented their research at the poster session of the WNY 黑料科 Psychology Conference. Each student replicated a published study, receiving feedback from professors and external faculty reviewers before presenting at the conference. This experience allowed students to learn how to defend and explain psychology science through experimental design, as well as the importance of replicating published findings.

At the same conference, two students, Abigail Wheeler 鈥24 and Arianna Zampella 鈥23 presented a collaborative research project on dehumanization in online conversations. The presentation was titled, 鈥淐an others鈥 responses reduce the dehumanization of toxic commenters online? Comparing the impact of four different kinds of replies on animalistic dehumanization.鈥 The two students collaborated with Associate Professor of Psychology, Alison Young Reusser, on the project.

This conference,鈥 said Reusser, 鈥渋s a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their presentation skills, answer questions related to their research, and learn about research performed by students at other schools and in other areas of psychology.

The 4th annual was held at the University of Buffalo. The goal of the conference is to provide undergraduate psychology students with the opportunity to present their scientific findings at a research meeting. It is specifically designed to be affordable and inviting to undergraduate students and is a great transition to larger national conventions. The conference also provides an opportunity for local students and faculty to meet and network.

Kim and Vietze鈥檚 research investigates second-generation Korean American youths and whether their bicultural identity helps them develop resilience to prejudice and discrimination.

Paul Young, dean of education and psychology at Houghton, speaks proudly of Kim鈥檚 accomplishment.

Dr. Kim鈥檚 article on Biculturalism and Resilience in Korean American Young Adults integrates her expertise in developmental psychology by applying theory to a topic that has been a key part of the Houghton experience–lived connections across cultures.

The results of this study could have significant implications for public health as they provide the opportunity to understand the emotional difficulties and sufferings of youths with minority backgrounds.

Dr. Alison Young Reusser, assistant professor of psychology, was recently awarded an ($30,000 over three years) for a collaborative team research project titled 鈥淒oes Grace to the Undeserving Have Social Costs?鈥 The Initiative Grant supports research projects that bring together professors at two or more Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) institutions.

Young Reusser is the project leader for a core research team that includes Olivet Nazarene University psychology faculty members Lisa Gassin and Kristian Veit and 贬辞耻驳丑迟辞苍鈥檚 own professor of theology Jonathan Case. 鈥淟isa and I heard about the grant opportunity and started talking about any overlap between her research interests (forgiveness) and my own (social psychology of attitudes),鈥 said Young Reusser. After meeting a few times, we decided to look at benevolence more broadlyand, specifically, how others view us when we act benevolently. Focusing the project on online discourse, the team plans to use machine learning to investigate benevolent responses on a large scale. 鈥淭he idea for using machine learning was sparked by a large number of studies in computer science, which emphasize classifying toxic comments as toxic,鈥 continued Young Reusser. 鈥淲e have a sense for how often online toxicity occurs but not really how often benevolent responses to that toxicity happen.鈥

Associate Dean of the Faculty, Cathy Freytag, has applied for this grant in the pastso I know how involved it is,鈥 Freytag explained. 鈥淭o be awarded this highly competitive grant on the first try is a really significant accomplishment鈥攁nd their topic is so timely and relevant in this moment.鈥

Additional faculty members from CCCU institutions will be serving as external consultants for various stages of the project. 鈥We have also asked Dr. Andrew Ledbetter at Texas Christian University, Dr. Cathy Bareiss at Bethel and Dr. Heidi Giannini here at Houghton,鈥 added Young Reusser. 鈥They’ve already proven very helpful! Additionally, we brought on a qualitative research specialist, Danielle Jacques, M.A., who will consult on the focus groups and interviews Lisa Gassin will be conducting.鈥

鈥淲e congratulate Alison on receiving one of this year鈥檚 CCCU networking awards,鈥 said 黑料科 President, Shirley Mullen. 鈥淭hese are highly competitive and speak very well of who Dr. Young Reusser is as a scholar and teacher in the context of a Christian liberal arts framework.鈥
